South Field Research Group (South Field Group)

The South Field Group was formed to address aircraft noise issues associated with the operation of the South Field, or commercial airline and air cargo facility of Oakland International Airport. 

As a technical sub-committee of the Noise Forum, the South Field Group meets quarterly and is chaired by the Airside Operations Manager. The group consists of staff from the cities of Alameda and San Leandro, residents from both communities, and Airport staff.  Representatives from the FAA, Federal Express and Southwest Airlines serve as advisors to the group.  The first meeting was held on December 10, 2002 and was formed at the request of the City of San Leandro.  The purpose is to both share information on current procedures and explore options that might exist to reduce the impact of aircraft noise from South Field operations on neighboring communities.  This group is patterned after the North Field Group, which has been effective in providing an educational forum for citizens, agency staff and airport operators to discuss the issues and understand them from a variety of perspectives.  The research group evaluates aircraft noise abatement procedures that reduce noise impacts on some neighborhoods while not unduly affecting others and monitor implementation of these procedures.
